Whether it’s a day trip to Kosciuszko, exploring the beaches of the Royal National Park or camping under the stars at the Blue Mountains, motorists will be able to pay their vehicle entry fee via Park’nPay as the app rolls out across national parks over the next couple of months.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the NSW Government’s Park’nPay app will be extended to allow people visiting national parks to use the app when purchasing their vehicle entry fee on-line.

“The technology is a game changer and gives drivers the power to easily pay and top up for parking from their phones in a few simple clicks,” Mr Dominello said.

“We’ve made life easier for families and drivers, so they can spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time worrying about parking.”

Environment Minister James Griffin said as NSW reopened and people were free to travel, it is the perfect time to visit the State’s national parks.

“The expansion to our world-famous national parks is a real win for our avid explorers and nature lovers, and with Park’nPay motorists will be able to pay their entry fee from their mobile phone in select areas,” Mr Griffin said.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for the millions of visitors to NSW’s parks each year to spend more time enjoying the stunning natural beauty our state has to offer.

“Through the Park’nPay app, users can see the national park highlighted in blue, which indicates the area that the fee covers.”

More than 78,000 customers have downloaded the Park’nPay app since its launch in 2019 and more than 93 per cent have given the experience the thumbs up.

Motorists can use Park’nPay app across numerous councils as well as find real-time parking availability for Transport for NSW Commuter Carparks, locations of EV charging stations and more than 18,000 private driveways to rent. For more information on where the technology can be used, including which national parks, please visit: https://parknpay.nsw.gov.au/

Like many growing regional coastal areas of Australia, the Tweed Shire has recently been facing significant challenges in coping with a major influx of visitors and more permanent residents migrating from major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. Whilst this activity is a great boost for our local economy and businesses, the growing inflow of people is placing a strain on our beautiful and sensitive coastline and adjoining residential areas and business centres, with an increasing pattern of non-compliance with Tweed Council’s road and public open space rules. These illegal activities include the parking of vehicles in dangerous and unsafe locations, overnight camping and rubbish dumping.

Whilst taking compliance and enforcement action against such activities is an important Council service, our hard working and dedicated Rangers Team have been burdened in recent years by increasing incidences of verbal and physical attacks by members of the public.

Council therefore has been developing and implementing a range of strategies to provide our staff with a safer and healthier work environment.

A key strategy has been the introduction of a number of smart technology tools, most notably the commencement of operations of a new Parking Enforcement Vehicle in 2020.

Through Council’s contracted suppliers Duncan Solutions, the Vehicle is fitted with the SenSen Network’s state-of-the-art cameras and GPS mapping software. Cameras mounted on the roof provide a 360 degree view. The car detects offences in real time, including illegal parking in bus zones, school zones, clearways, no parking and no stopping zones. The licence plate and location are recorded when an offence is detected.

The introduction of the Vehicle was supported through a comprehensive communications and stakeholder consultation program with the main Business Chambers, Schools and local community groups, with a focus on raising the community awareness and transparency of the role and purpose of the Vehicle.

After almost 12 months of operation, the new Vehicle has proven to be very successful on a number of levels. From the organisation’s perspective, the Vehicle has proven to be a much more efficient and safer process compared to the old fashioned chalking of the tyre patrols, providing a more reliable and accountable record for both members of the public and Council’s contracted penalty infringement notices processing arrangement with Revenue NSW. The regular presence of the vehicle has also promoted a safer movement and turn-over of parking areas in the Shire’s main business centres and school zones.

Council has since extended the use of the Vehicle to more effectively regulate illegal overnight camping in the road reserves adjoining key locations along the Tweed Coast, which has been positively received by the adjoining local residential and business areas.

Council continues to explore the benefits of smart technology for its Rangers Service through the trial of Body Worn Cameras and Radio Systems.

Duncan Solutions is pleased to have worked closely with Logan City Council in their trialling of an innovative solution to improve parking in the Beenleigh region with the help of a new smart parking system.

The new smart parking system will advise drivers entering the Beenleigh CBD where parking spots are available.

The information can be accessed via a smartphone app and eventually will be displayed on electronic signage on key thoroughfares.

Small sensors and bay number plaques will be installed on 373 car park bays in streets surrounding Beenleigh Town Square as part of a three-year trial by Logan City Council.

The installation works will occur in two stages:

Stage one (from Tuesday, February 23) – George St, Crete St, Kent St, James St, Victoria St

Stage two (August, dates to be confirmed) – Main St, City Rd, John St, York St

Economic Development Chair, Deputy Mayor Jon Raven, said the smart parking trial was another example of the Council delivering on key outcomes of the 2017 Beenleigh Summit.

“No one likes driving around looking for a parking spot and this smart parking system will avoid that frustration by advising in real-time exactly where the open spots are,” Mr Raven said.

Installation of the sensors will be done between 5.30am and 11am to minimise disruption to drivers and businesses. Some parking bays will have to be closed to allow the work to be done safely. Only one side of the street will be affected on any particular day and parking bays will be reopened once the work is completed.

Division 12 Councillor, Karen Murphy, said the new smart parking system would enable drivers to plan their trips into Beenleigh.

“Not only will drivers know where to get a park quickly, the app also will advise how much time you can spend in that bay,” Ms Murphy said.

“That will make it easier to visit Beenleigh to shop and to do business.”

The project will be delivered in two stages to allow for the resurfacing of streets in the Beenleigh CBD and other streetscape upgrades.

The works are part of the $5 million Beenleigh Implementation Fund allocated to a number of projects based on community and business feedback from the Beenleigh Summit.

As Australia’s cities grow ever smarter, town planners are thinking even further outside the proverbial box when it comes to designing the metropolises of the future – and car parks are no exception. With a host of revolutionary technology popping up across not only the car park industry, but sectors across the spectrum, it will pay to be ahead of the curve when designing your car park of the future.

Town planners are having to think even further outside the proverbial box when it comes to designing the metropolises of the future.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at a few technologies that you should consider when designing your car park, from driverless cars, through to digitised payments.

Driverless cars

Though far from becoming a mainstream reality just yet, the promise and proposed benefits of driverless cars cannot be underestimated. Increased safety and reliability are the key factors at play here, as is better fuel economy and, tellingly, reduced congestion.

It’s thought that a big part of congestion in Australia’s major cities isn’t just down to people commuting to work, or heading over to the shopping mall. Rather, a big factor behind it is that a big chunk of cars toiling through the streets are endlessly circling, just looking for a car parking space.

Sydney’s congestion is notoriously bad – can driverless cars cure it?

It’s been put forward that driverless cars, when they eventually become a reality, won’t actually need to park. Of course, they’ll have to park somewhere, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be close by. For example, you could be dropped off at the office door by your driverless car, then off it will go to find itself a space in a custom-built facility. At the end of the day, it’ll come and pick you up, causing minimal delays on the road as heads to exactly where it needs to be.

The truth is, lots of space in cities is taken up by hulking, outdated car parks that likely won’t be fit for purpose in the future – think about how all that space could be better utilised. Be sure to bear in mind that modern facilities, with the potential to accommodate self-driving cars, is the way forward when planning your car park of the future.

Digitised payments

Here’s a statistic for you. Over half of Australians (52 per cent) paid for everything – shopping, parking, and the like – via debit or credit card over the last three years, according to a study released by the Reserve Bank of Australia. That’s up from 43 per cent in 2013, and just 26 per cent in 2007. On the obverse, cash payments have steadily declined over the years, from 69 per cent usage in 2007, down to 37 per cent over the last three years.

Paying via contactless card or other digitised methods is far more convenient than carrying wads of cash around.

Our point? Well, paying via contactless card or other digitised methods is far more convenient than carrying wads of cash around, and it’s quicker, too. Indeed, a study by Visa has found that people could save an enormous eight hours a year should they ditch cash and graduate to electronic methods.

Paying for parking is undergoing a revolution, too. At Duncan Solutions, we’re dedicated to coming up with new, more efficient ways to pay. This means digital – we’ve implemented contactless payments into our terminals (PayWave, Mastercard PayPass), and we’ve also incorporated pay by mobile into our repertoire (Android Pay, ApplePay, Google Wallet). Hence, it makes perfect sense to install state-of-the-art payment terminals at your fledgling car park – the way payment trends are going, it’s only a matter of time before Australia operates as a completely cashless society, and you’ll want to embrace that.
